purpose

While in my senior year of high schools and preparing to go to university for marketing (that ended up not being the case), I wanted to get into editing more. I had edited a few videos for school projects and liked the process of it; working with clips to find the right cuts and overall pace was very satisfying. Of course, I wanted the feeling of owning a business so I made a specific YouTube channel for these trailers, Purple Circle Studios.

Over a couple months, I would edit trailers for media and to songs that peaked my interest at the time. All of which were edited on Corel VideoStudio. My skills were very limited but everyone has to start somewhere. These trailers were mainly focused on cutting in time with music than they were on marketing a product.

Below are my trailers for Star Wars: The Old RepublicNo Country for Old Men (2007), Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and Lone Survivor (2013). Below them is a brief methodology for each.

TRAILERs

methodology

Star Wars: The Old Republic

This "trailer" was more of an experiment with sound design than it was with editing itself. Having not worked on sound design for any of my other trailers, I wanted to challenge myself and give it a go.

The footage is from The Old Republic's official 'Deceived' trailer with music from AndrewG on YouTube.

~80% of the sound design is redone by me with most being for the large battle. I used what I could find online of lightsaber sounds, blaster fire, yells and punches.

No Country for Old Men (2007)

With the lack of music, I feel as though No Country for Old Men gained an extra sense of realism and eeriness, further heightened by its slow scenes and dialogue. I attempted to emulate this by choosing to have no music in the trailer and keep the same pace in terms of shots. It was an interesting experiment and challenging at the time.

While the trailer does give you a sense of what to expect from the film, three and a half minutes is rather long.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands

After making the trailer for Lone Survivor, I liked the editing process and wanted to practice more. With a new favorite song, I chose to cut a trailer for Ghost Recon: Wildlands. I'm not sure why as I have never played the game. I guess it looked pretty and had a decent amount of material to use.

All of the footage of the trailer was obtained by re-cutting Ubisoft's promotional material of the game.

The cocaine explosion/reveal of the official logo and the cymbal hit of the song at 01:19 is not synced. I had it edited to, but must have messed something up before exporting. This still bothers me to this day...

Lone Survivor (2013)

As many of my projects start with a baseline of music, this one started with Wild Horses by Bishop Briggs. The aim of this "trailer" was less of marketing the film to a potential audience and more of practicing my editing to my favorite song at the time.

With no sound design, I intended to emphasize cuts with beats of the song and images that best related to the lyrics.

All footage was obtained by scrubbing through and cutting a 100% legally downloaded version of the film.
